A New Power Player Emerges in Fleet Tech

Platform Science has completed its acquisition of Trimble’s global transportation telematics units, marking a significant consolidation in US trucking technology and bringing two established in-cab systems under a single platform.

The transaction, announced in September 2024 at Trimble’s Insight Tech Conference in Las Vegas, closed on February 10, 2025. It combines Platform Science’s software platform with Trimble’s telematics business, expanding the former’s reach across commercial fleets.

Under the agreement, Trimble will become a shareholder in Platform Science and take a seat on its board. It joins existing strategic investors including Cummins, Daimler Truck, Paccar and Schneider, reflecting broader industry backing for Platform Science’s open-platform approach. Trimble is expected to focus more on its core businesses, including its Vusion compliance analytics unit and the Transporeon transport management system.

At the centre of the combined group is Virtual Vehicle, Platform Science’s connected-vehicle application platform developed with truck manufacturers. The system allows fleet operators to deploy telematics, driver management and safety applications without replacing existing hardware, an advantage for operators managing mixed fleets.

This interoperability is particularly relevant as fleets face regulatory requirements such as electronic logging device mandates and Hours of Service rules set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Companies say integrated systems can help reduce compliance costs and operational complexity.

The deal also gives Platform Science access to Trimble’s global customer base, extending its presence among large enterprise fleets. The combined business is positioned to compete more directly with other telematics providers as demand grows for integrated platforms that combine vehicle data, driver monitoring and predictive maintenance.

The acquisition comes as truck manufacturers increasingly embed telematics systems directly into new vehicles, reducing reliance on aftermarket providers. Industry participants expect further consolidation as companies seek scale and broader software ecosystems to remain competitive.
