Smarter Fleets Need Better Data

Fleet Advantage survey shows AI adoption climbing, but weak data integration continues to limit fleet performance.

Artificial intelligence is becoming a core part of fleet operations, but many trucking companies are discovering that software is only as effective as the data behind it. A Fleet Advantage survey of more than 2,500 fleet executives, presented at the National Private Truck Council's 2026 Annual Conference, shows AI adoption has reached a clear turning point across US private fleets. Route optimization leads the way at 71 percent, while maintenance scheduling follows at 64.5 percent.

Those gains come with an equally striking warning. The survey found that 71 percent of executives face significant data integration challenges, while 64.5 percent cited poor data quality as a major obstacle. Many fleets are investing in advanced AI tools, only to find their existing systems cannot supply the accurate, connected information those platforms require.

The financial impact is becoming harder to ignore. Route optimization and predictive maintenance rely on real-time data flowing across dispatch, telematics, and maintenance systems. When those platforms remain disconnected, AI models work with incomplete information, reducing the accuracy of recommendations and limiting potential savings.

For technology vendors, the findings highlight a growing opportunity beyond AI software itself. Demand is shifting toward data integration platforms and managed data services built specifically for trucking operations. Fleets that solve these underlying issues can cut downtime, improve asset utilization, and capture stronger returns from technology investments already in place.

With AI now firmly established across key fleet functions, the next competitive advantage will come from stronger data infrastructure rather than wider adoption. Companies that strengthen those foundations today will be better positioned to realize the full value of the AI tools they already own.
